Let’s take a look at our past Open Streets!

This more condensed, 1/2 mile car-free celebration of public space aimed to bring people together to reimagine how we utilize our streets, while specifically highlighting the often-overlooked Houston Avenue area. Serving as the kick-off for Bike Walk Macon’s annual Bike Walk Month, the event exceeded all expectations with approximately 600 enthusiastic attendees who immersed themselves in a day filled with fun, community engagement, and a reimagining of public spaces.

Our second 2022 activation celebrated the connectivity between the Pleasant Hill and the Historic Vineville neighborhoods by activating Walnut St. + Clayton St. + Buford Pl. + Oak Haven Ave. More than 1000 people reclaimed their streets along with 40 activity partners. We also installed four AARP grant-funded artistic crosswalks at the intersection of Rogers Ave + Clayton St that featured two local artists chosen by the Vineville neighborhood (Heidi Clinite and Erin Hawkins), and two local artists chosen by the Pleasant Hill neighborhood (Tiara Ponce and CMD).

We had a blast reimagining streets in Pleasant Hill on October 2nd along Pursley St. + 3rd. Ave. + Ward St. 500+ people joined us with a total of 35 activity partners. We also partnered with LH Williams Elementary and Andrea Cooke to paint a sensory sidewalk pathway at the school’s entrance during Open Streets Macon. The sidewalk mural was designed by LH Williams teacher and local artist, Char Lockett.

Our second neighborhood activation at Napier Ave. had approximately 550 people and 26 activity partners. We partnered with Central High School’s fine arts teacher Jenesa White to paint a sensory sidewalk pathway and colorful crosswalks along Napier Ave. (thank you to Andrea Cooke for sharing this idea with us!). Be sure to walk through Central High and hop, skip, and jump along the sidewalk!

Open Streets 2021 kicked off at Boulevard. 800 people joined us with a total of 19 activity partners. We will be installing speed cushions along Boulevard in the next few months (thank you North Highlands Neighborhood Association!) to improve safety for pedestrians.

Our last 2020 activation did not disappoint. 316 people took part in the activities that our 18 activity partners planned for them. Our wonderful team of committee members and volunteers painted these bright crosswalks in front of Memorial Gym.

Our second neighborhood activation at Monroe/Tattnall had approximately 700 people and 29 activity partners. The Pleasant Hill Neighborhood association painted this "Pleasant Hill Proud" mural at the entrance of their neighborhood. Beautiful bumpouts were also painted at the intersection of Chestnut & Tattnall St.

Open Streets 2020 kicked off at Maynard Street. 750 people joined us with a total of 19 activity partners. Randy Heart completed this traffic calming project. Be sure to ride through Maynard Street and see the completed design.

Open Streets Macon returned Sunday, October 20th from 2 pm to 6 pm with a new route! The streets of Macon came to life as nearly 1.5 miles of Ash Street to Montpelier Ave. become a paved park. The stretches of street were closed to motorized traffic.

Maconites experienced 1.8 miles of car-free streets on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (from the Ocmulgee River to the Industrial District) and Cherry St. (from Cherry Street Plaza to Bernd Park). People traffic replaced car traffic, as sections of Downtown Macon streets were closed to cars and open to residents!

Maconites were treated to 1.5 miles of car-free streets from the Washington Memorial Library to A. L. Miller Village. People traffic replaced car traffic, as sections of College St. and Montpelier Ave. were closed to cars and open to residents!

The inaugural Open Streets Macon on April 17, 2016 connected Macon neighborhoods across College Street via a 3 mile route. Thanks to everyone who came to the streets to walk, bike, and play!
